Day 1: Eurosurf Junior Games

EUROJUNIOR2016 FINAL thumb200 140

Day 1: Eurosurf Junior Games

Day 1 kicked off under dark grey skies with the remnants of the overnight storm hanging over Agadir like a bleak, desolate blanket. The surf had picked up, but unfortunately so had the wind, the conditions were a challenging solid 4-5ft with a slight devil wind meaning that only the prepared would advance. And these juniors did not disappoint. Many were outstanding and there were a number of truly standout performances.

The day kicked off with the first rounds of the U18 boys on podium 1 followed by U16’s, and the U18 Bodyboard and U16 Bodyboards on podium 2. Round 1 of the U18 boys was completed, and the standout, amongst others was Boubker Bouaouda of Morocco, who won his heat with the highest heat total of the round, which was thoroughly well deserved. Yael Pena of Spain was another standout, this time in the U16 boys division. He was patient, only catching 3 waves all heat, but his heat total of 15.70 was the highest of the day. The last two heats of the U16 will conclude round 1 tomorrow.

Podium 2 endured more difficult conditions than Podium 1, with wash through sets making the paddle out long and strenuous, and closeouts were common. But the bodyboarders didn’t disappoint. The traditional powerhouses of the sport; Spain and Portugal both had two through to the next round in the U18s, avoiding the repercharge, and posting good scores in doing so. The Moroccan team also had two heat winners in this division, proving local knowledge can be of massive importance when the conditions are tricky. This was also true in the U16 bodyboard division, with the six heats being won by the two Portuguese, two Spanish, and two Moroccans, which will undoubtedly provide for a close fought match between the three nations towards the sharp end of competition later in the week.

Conditions should hopefully settle down over the next few days and there should be an excellent platform with which these youngsters can showcase their talents. Day 2 will begin with the conclusion of the first round of the U16 boys on Podium 1, and the second round of the U18 bodyboard on podium 2. The full running order can be found at eurosurfing.org although as usual this is subject to change depending on conditions.

Live scores will be posted on the website throughout the day or alternatively the event can be followed via the Eurosurfing Facebook page.
